There is nothing more effortless as breathing. That is, unless you struggle to do so. Our lungs play a central role in our ability to breathe as they are the center of the respiratory system. October is observed as Healthy Lung Month, a health awareness campaign to educate the public about “the importance of protecting our lungs against general neglect, bronchitis, mold, air pollution, and smoking.”
The American Lung Association suggests the following tips to keep your lungs healthy:
- Don’t smoke.
- Avoid exposure to indoor pollutants that can damage your lungs.
- Minimize exposure to outdoor air pollution.
- Prevent infection.
- Get regular healthcare.
