How Are You Celebrating Healthy Aging Month?

September is Healthy Aging Month with a mission to “encourage local level Healthy Aging events that promote taking personal responsibility for one’s health – physically, socially, mentally or financially.” Carolyn Worthington, editor-in-chief of Healthy Aging Magazine and the executive director of Healthy Aging, suggests that it is never too late to “re-invent” yourself. “It’s never too late to find a new career, a new sport, passion, hobby or work on your health issues,” stated Worthington.

The Population Reference Bureau’s Population Bulletin, produced a fact sheet with statistics on “Aging in the United States.” The most recent updated version in June 2019 revealed that “The number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million by 2060, and 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population will rise from 16 percent to 23 percent.” As much as there may be challenges to a larger aging population, there are also, amazing opportunities. With science, technology, and medicine advancing at lightning speeds, individuals just need to be determined to take advantage of what is available to enhance their lives.
