March 15, 2019 is Observed as World Sleep Day: “Healthy Sleep, Healthy Aging”

According to www.worldsleepday.org , “World Sleep Day is designed to raise awareness of sleep as a human privilege that is often compromised by the habits of modern life.” This year’s 12th annual event was started by medical professionals and researchers at the World Sleep Society, dedicated to the study of sleep medicine and disorders. It is a call to action on all important aspects relating to sleep.

The 2019 World Sleep Day slogan is: “Healthy Sleep, Healthy Aging.” The idea behind the slogan is that proper sleep enhances health at any age and that when sleep is compromised, health declines and quality of life also suffers. Dr. Timothy I. Morgenthaler, of the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine, explains, “Getting good quality and quantity sleep is one key to aging well, improving the odds of physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Getting good sleep in young adulthood and middle age reduces the risk of obesity and hypertension, protects against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s Disease, and has been associated with rates of depression. In some cases, regular sleep has even been associated with fewer signs of aging in facial skin and better tissue tone. Look better, feel better, be better. There is a lot to be said for giving good quality sleep a high priority in our daily lives.”

Over 70 countries will participate in World Sleep Day activities this year.  More information on World Sleep Day and how you can become involved can be viewed at www.worldsleepday.org/get-involved/plan.
