Migraine is a Legitimate Neurobiological Disease That Affects Billions Worldwide

“Migraine is an extraordinarily prevalent neurological disease, affecting 39 million men, women, and children in the U.S. and 1 billion worldwide,” states the Migraine Research Foundation, which also shares that “migraine is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world.” The United States federal government recognizes migraine as a legitimate neurobiological disease.

The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) – National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, explains that most migraine sufferers experience an intense, throbbing headache on one side of the head. Additional symptoms may also accompany the headache, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and/or sound. Women are three times more likely to experience migraine headaches than men with a correlation to changes in hormonal levels relating to their menstrual cycles.

There is no real cure for migraine. However, treatment is available to prevent migraine attacks. For external triggers that can be controlled, lifestyle modification is recommended to prevent future attacks.
