The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), predicts that the 2019 hurricane season will begin June 1st and runs through November 30. In preparation for the hurricane season, the National Weather Service, a division of NOAA, sponsors the awareness campaign, National Hurricane Preparedness Week, to urge the public to start taking the necessary steps to protect themselves, their families, and their properties ahead of any possible imminent danger.
During this week, and year-round, the public is encouraged to be mindful of the potentially destructive and devastating nature of tropical storms, cyclones, and hurricanes, and the possibility for injuries and loss of life. Taking early precautions can mean the difference between life and death.
In preparing for a hurricane, it is advised to prepare a hurricane kit in advance, in case you are forced to evacuate or are stuck in your home for a few days with no electricity. The State of Florida suggests the following for your hurricane kit:
- A three-day supply of non-perishable food.
- A three-day supply of water.
- A first aid kit that includes any prescription medication that you and your family members take.
- Personal hygiene and sanitation products.
- Flashlights with working and extra batteries.
- A battery-operated radio with working and extra batteries.
- A waterproof container with your cash and important documents.
- A manual can opener.
- A lighter or matches.
- Books, magazines, and/or games for recreation.
- Special needs items such as pet supplies and baby supplies as needed.
- A cooler and ice packs.
- An evacuation plan for family members if they become separated.
