Today is National Women’s Health & Fitness Day Encouraging Women to Take Control of Their Health Through Physical Fitness

Today is National Women’s Health & Fitness Day, an annual health awareness campaign that takes place on the last Wednesday in September focusing “attention on the importance of regular physical activity and health awareness for women.” The United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Women’s Health (OWH), explains that, “Being physically active is one of the most important steps you can take to get and stay healthy. Women of all ages and abilities benefit from getting active.”

In a report from the Surgeon General of the United States regarding physical activity and health in women, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), presents some key messages:

  • Physical activity need not be strenuous to achieve health benefits.
  • Previously sedentary women who begin physical activity programs should start with short intervals (5-10 minutes) of physical activity and gradually build up to a desired level of activity.
  • The emphasis on moderate amounts of physical activity makes it possible to vary activities to meet individual needs, preferences, and life circumstances.

Before you begin any exercise regimen, it is always advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
