October 13-19: International Infection Prevention Week “Vaccines are Everybody’s Business”

Since 1986, after an initiative spearheaded by United States President Ronald Reagan and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), the global week-long public health awareness campaign, International Infection Prevention Week has continuously taken place. This year’s theme is “Vaccines are Everybody’s Business.” The purpose of this campaign is to “help raise awareness of the role vaccines play in infection prevention and protecting public health.”

According to APIC, almost 1 in 25 people in the United States die annually from catching infections they were exposed to at a healthcare facility. These infections tend to be quite preventable with some very basic steps:

  • Clean your hands often.
  • Ask about vaccinations so you can stay healthy.
  • Ask to have your room cleaned.
  • Speak up about your care.
  • Learn about healthcare-associated infections.

Speak to your healthcare provider about the vaccines you need to protect your immunity and keep you safe from infections.
