Today is the International Day of People with Disabilities 2019 “The Future is Accessible”

Today is celebrated as the International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPWD). The theme for 2019 is “The Future is Accessible.” This “means that we must all, together, look towards a future where the barriers which stand in people’s way no longer exist.” The United Nations has been recognizing December 3 as a day for people with disabilities since 1992.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “People with disabilities are among the most marginalized groups in the world…. Disability is to be understood as a human rights issue. People are disabled by society, not just their bodies. These barriers can be overcome, if governments, nongovernmental organizations, professionals and people with disabilities and their families work together.”
