Happiness Happens Month has been celebrated every year during the month of August since 1998 to “encourage people to take stock of their lives and try to think about the things that make them happy and to share this joy with others.” It was founded by Pamela Gail Johnson of the Secret Society of Happy People. This may sound quite lighthearted, but science heavily backs the theory that happiness has some very important health benefits that are far-reaching.
In a study published in the Iranian Journal of Public Health, researchers concluded that “biological and health factors are critical in underlying happiness and their role in happiness is undeniable.” Harvard University explains that the key to improving one’s health may lie in simply focusing on the things that make us feel happy. This is a way of rewiring our brains to think happy thoughts and thus release certain chemicals in our brains that are only released when we feel happy. These chemicals have been proven to also have physical health benefits and can improve our overall health and wellness.
