Breathe Easy, Keep Your Lungs Healthy

There is nothing more effortless as breathing. That is, unless you struggle to do so. Our lungs play a central role in our ability to breathe as they are the center of the respiratory system. It is important to protect our lungs against general neglect, bronchitis, mold, air pollution, and smoking.

Now there is COVID-19 that can cause extreme and even irreparable damage to our very fragile lungs. According to the American Lung Association, “The lungs are a major target of COVID-19, when the virus is inhaled into the lungs, it invades the tissues, causing inflammation and breathing problems. If the infection gets worse, it can develop into pneumonia. In a small number of severe cases, patients can develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) that will require them to be placed on a ventilator for oxygen. If too much of the lung is damaged and not enough oxygen is supplied to the rest of the body, respiratory failure could lead to organ failure and death.”

The American Lung Association suggests the following tips to keep your lungs healthy:

  • Do not smoke.
  • Avoid exposure to indoor pollutants that can damage your lungs.
  • Minimize exposure to outdoor air pollution.
  • Prevent infection.
  • Get regular healthcare.
  • Exercise
