For the last thirty years, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), has observed the month of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. This year’s campaign is called #ChangeYourMind and hopes to raise awareness for those disenfranchised and stigmatized by living with traumatic brain injuries, empowering survivors and caregivers, and promoting the types of available support.
The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC), defines traumatic brain injury (TBI), as “a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury.” The CDC emphasizes that while everyone is at risk for TBI, children and older adults are at an increased risk. According to the BIAA, “every nine seconds, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury. Every day, 137 people die in this county due to a TBI -related injury. We can’t ignore it.”
