Researchers at Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University have blown away the scientific community by discovering that overproduction of the protein, clusterin, can lead to cardiometabolic syndrome. This occurs when there is an unhealthy combination of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and extra body fat around the waist. The study, published in the February 2019 issue of the journal, Diabetes Care, suggests that while clusterin is a biomarker for cardiometabolic syndrome, its detection can also be therapeutic as preventative steps can be taken in advance.
According to the World Health Organization, 25% of the world’s population currently suffer from cardiometabolic syndrome and that they have twice the mortality rate from coronary heart disease and are three times as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke than those without.
