How Important is Thyroid Health?

The thyroid is a very small gland but plays a large role in many of the body’s systems. Thyroid Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and to learn more about the importance of the thyroid to our overall health. According to the Society for Endocrinology, “The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system and is responsible for producing and releasing thyroid hormones into the bloodstream. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolic rate as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, mood and bone maintenance. Its correct functioning depends on having a good supply of iodine from the diet.”

WebMD explains that, “The most common thyroid problems involve abnormal production of thyroid hormones. Too much thyroid hormone results in a condition known as hyperthyroidism. Insufficient hormone production leads to hypothyroidism.” Other thyroid disorders are goiter, which is an enlarged gland, graves disease, and thyroid cancer.
