July is Herbal/ Prescription Interaction Awareness Month Inform Your Healthcare Professional About Every Medication You Are Taking, Including Herbal Remedies, To Minimize the Risk of Serious Drug Interactions

Whether you have been prescribed medication from your doctor, taking over the counter drugs or herbal remedies that are considered “all natural,” there are risks associated with all medications. There are even greater risks when taking multiple medications concurrently as drug interactions can sometimes be fatal. The purpose of this public health awareness campaign, Herbal/Prescription Interaction Awareness Month, “is to inform the public that herbal supplements can cause potentially dangerous drug interactions when taken with certain medications.”

American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) reports that approximately 25% of U.S. adults claim to be taking prescription medication at the same time as herbal remedies which are classified as dietary supplements. According to AAFP, some of these supplements, such as St. Johns wort and goldenseal are known to cause significant drug interactions when taken with certain prescription drugs. Hence, it is very important to disclose all medications and supplements including herbal remedies when consulting your healthcare professional.
