May is International Mediterranean Diet Month What are the Health Benefits of this Old-World Diet?

Each year, during the month of May, the Oldways Mediterranean Food Alliance, celebrates International Mediterranean Diet Month (#MedMonth), to highlight the culinary flavors and the vast health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet. The American Heart Association explains that the “Mediterranean Diet is a generic term based on the typical eating habits in the countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. Elements include dairy products, fish and poultry being more common than red meat; fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds; use olive oil; wine consumed in low to moderate amounts”

U.S. News and World Report ranked the Mediterranean Diet #1 in Best Diets Overall for 2019 among 41 that were evaluated for being nutritionally sound with diverse foods and flavors. University Health News lists the following among the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet:

  • Preserve memory and prevent cognitive decline
  • Reduce your risk of heart disease
  • Strengthen bones
  • Manage diabetes and control blood sugar
