National Women’s Health Week (NWHW), is celebrated each May starting on Mother’s Day. It is a reminder to women to take care of their own health, as they are often the caretakers of everyone else. Sponsored by the Office of Women’s Health, under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this awareness campaign aims to encourage women to take advantage of available resources to better improve their physical and mental health.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suggests the following steps that women can take to improve their health:
- Visit a healthcare provider for a well-woman visit and preventative screenings.
- Get active.
- Eat healthy.
- Do not ignore your mental health. This includes adequate sleep and stress management.
- Avoid unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, texting while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt or not wearing a bicycle helmet.
