According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “about 21,000 people die each year from radon-related lung cancer.” The EPA explains that, “Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. Radon gas is inert, colorless and odorless. Most radon exposure occurs inside homes, schools and workplaces.”
The month of January is observed as National Radon Action Month to increase awareness and to educate the public about limiting exposure to radon gas’ preventable health risks. The EPA and the United States Surgeon General encourage Americans to test their properties for radon during this month.
