This week, October 20-26, is observed in the United States and Canada, as Respiratory Care Week. It is a health awareness campaign that “recognizes members of the respiratory care profession and promotes awareness of lung health issues and practices.”
Respiratory therapists are specialized healthcare practitioners trained in pulmonary medicine. According to the Lung Institute, “They teach people to manage and conduct tests on people who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), asthma, and other lung diseases.” They can be found in a variety of settings such as in intensive care units, operating rooms, outpatient clinics, home-healthcare, public education, and pulmonary rehabilitation.
