The beginnings of yoga can be traced back to ancient India to over 5,000 years ago and has evolved through time from a purely spiritual practice mainly among Buddhists and Hindus, to a now global phenomenon that is generally promoted for wellness. According to the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, “Studies have suggested possible benefits of yoga for several aspects of wellness, including stress management, mental/emotional health, promoting healthy eating/activity habits, sleep and balance.”
The Department of Health & Human Services has declared September National Yoga Month to raise awareness about the health benefits of yoga. According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, “Yoga is a series of stretches and poses that you do with breathing techniques. It offers the powerful benefits of exercise. And since yoga is gentle, almost anyone can do it, regardless of your age or fitness level.”
