The most common types of cancer

Cancer is one of the deadliest medical conditions of this age. Cancer can also occur in different cells of the body. There are several types of cancer, over 200 of them. It is estimated that over 11 million persons in the US live with one form of cancer. The different types of cancer are characterized by similar manifestations which include the ability to grow uncontrollably and affect different organs of the body.

The occurrence of certain cancers is more frequent than others. Although the factors that contribute to the development of cancer are general, certain cancers occur more frequently than others. This article highlights some of the most common cancers in America and around the world. The causes and predisposing factors of the commonest cancers are also stated in this article.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer is one of the commonest cancer in the world today. Lung cancer is also one of the cancers with the lowest survival rate. Over 700,000 persons died from lungs cancer in 2015 alone. Research has also established that about 1.5 million persons are diagnosed of lung cancer every year. The cancerous cells develop in the inner linings of the lungs. Lung cancer can either be small and non-small cell lung cancer. A major predisposing factor for lung cancer is smoking.

Breast cancer

Breast cancer is another very common form of cancer. The cancerous cells grow on the tissue of the breast and can spread quickly to other tissues of the body. Breast cancer occurs in both men and women, although it is more commonly diagnosed in women. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the second commonest cancer diagnosed in women.

Factors that predispose a person to breast cancer include genetics, poor diet and environmental factors. When breast cancer is quickly diagnosed, it can be properly managed. About 500,000 die from breast cancer every year.

Prostate cancer

Prostrate cancer occurs in the prostate gland and is diagnosed in about 190,000 men yearly. The prostate is a part of the male reproductive organ and is found just beneath the bladder. Prostate cancer occurs more frequently in men older than 50 years.

When cancerous cells develop in the tissues of the prostate gland, it can spread to other tissues of the body.

Non-melanoma skin cancer

This type of cancer develops in the skin cell. There are different types of skin cancer, and skin cancer can develop in the different cells of the body. Because of the increased occurrence of skin cancer on skin exposed to the sun, increased exposure to the sun has been linked to skin cancer.

Skin cancer can occur in the squamous cells of the skin as well as the round cells of the skin and other cells of the skin. About one million persons are diagnosed with skin cancer yearly.

Although the causes of the different types of cancer have not been established, it is important to practice measures for healthier living. Such practices include reduced consumption of alcohol and smoking, better diet and exercise.
