The World is Going Nuts Over Plant Milk Are Plant Based Milk Alternatives Really Healthier Than Dairy Milk?

So today is World Plant Milk Day. According to its organizers, the reason for such a global celebration is because, “millions of people across the world are turning away from dairy and towards plant-based alternatives.” Zephie Begolo, head of campaigns for ProVeg UK, a food awareness organization, stated that, “People are fast realizing that plant milks outweigh dairy in terms of benefits for personal health, animal welfare and the environment.”

But are plant-based milk alternatives healthier than dairy milk? The American Society for Nutrition (ASN), measures the facts. Compared to dairy milk, plant milks “tend to have fewer calories, less fat (except for coconut-based milk), more water content (for better hydration), less protein except soy). Some are fortified with other vitamins and nutrients.”

According to ASN, some of the most popular reasons why people turn to plant-based milk alternatives are:

  • Lactose intolerance.
  • Milk allergy.
  • Vegan diet or lifestyle.
  • Ethical concerns

The greatest concern for substituting plant milk is for children under the age of 2 when human breast milk or formula is recommended. For older children, and for anyone seeking to make any dietary changes, consulting your healthcare provider is always advised.
