Today is National Senior Citizens Day Even Small Acts of Kindness Can Go a Long Way Today

Today is National Senior Citizens Day. It celebrates the achievements and contributions that older Americans have made to our society and was created to honor them. President Ronald Reagan first signed Proclamation 5847 in 1988 to honor senior citizens. The President then proclaimed, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.”

According to the website, www.seniorliving.org,  approximately 47 million seniors, aged 65 and older, currently live in the United States. That population is expected to double by 2060. With so much of the population being elderly, chances are, there is a senior citizen in your life. Show your appreciation by reaching out to those relatives or older friends who may be shut-ins and volunteer to do a chore, take them for a walk, out to dinner, or to the movies. For some, a simple phone call or visit will warm their hearts. For those with chronic health conditions, this maybe the day to take them to the doctor as getting around may be difficult and going alone may be scary.
