What You Should Know About The 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCOV)

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency as an outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCOV) has been confirmed. According to the WHO, 4,593 cases have been confirmed worldwide, with China reporting the most at 4,537 and 106 deaths so far directly contributed to the virus. The United States has confirmed five cases according to the WHO.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), explains that “The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) is a new virus that causes respiratory illness in people and can spread from person to person.” The CDC stresses that while the virus has been spreading from person-to-person contact in China, “this virus is NOT currently spreading in communities in the United States. Right now, the greatest risk of infection is for people in China or people who have travelled to China.”

The CDC reports that the symptoms of the 2019-nCOV are fever, cough and shortness of breath. However, many patients have experienced serious complications such as pneumonia in both lungs. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid exposure from the virus. The United States State Department issued a travel advisory on January 30, 2020, banning all commercial and non-essential U.S. governmental personnel travel to China, due to the coronavirus.

If you have travelled to China in the past 14 days and are experiencing any respiratory symptoms, contact your healthcare provider to discuss your treatment options.
