Why Care About Mental Health?

Since 1949, May is Mental Health Month, has been sponsored nationally by Mental Health America (MHA), and its affiliates like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). NAMI drives the awareness campaign, “Why Care?” Their answer is, “Because 1 in 5 people will be affected by mental illness in their lifetime.” The purpose of the campaign is to share the importance of caring as we relate to others, by way of mental health treatment, services, support, and education to the millions of people affected by mental illness. According to NAMI, “Care has the power to make life-changing impact on those affected by mental health conditions.”

The theme for the 2019 Mental Health Month is #4Mind4Body where they delve into a wide range of topics in which mental health affects our physical health and general well-being. By clicking on the dedicated hashtag, 4Mind4Body, resources and information on the following topics provided by MHA can be accessed:

  • Animal Companionship
  • Faith and Spirituality
  • Humor
  • Recreation
  • Social Connections
  • Work-Life Balance
