Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month U.S. Women Over 40 are at a Far Greater Risk of Vision Loss Than Men

During the month of April, the organization, Prevent Blindness, sponsors the awareness campaign, Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month to “educate women about the steps they can take to help stop vision loss.” The driving forces behind this campaign are the disproportionate statistics regarding vision loss between the genders. According to Prevent Blindness,” women make up the majority of the 4.4 million Americans age 40 and older who are visually impaired or blind. More women than men have age related macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.”

Prevent Blindness recommends the following steps to protect one’s vision and eye health:

  • Get regular eye exams
  • Quit Smoking
  • Consult a doctor regarding nutritional supplements
  • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and a brimmed- hats outdoors
  • Use eye cosmetics safely
  • Use contact lenses safely

Women, men, and children are encouraged to speak with their their healthcare professionals about any family history of eye diseases and to report any symptoms of vision loss or eye injury. You may also ask about proper eye protection and ways to keep your eyes healthy.
