June is National Cancer Survivor’s Month

Yesterday, Sunday June 2, 2019, was officially observed as National Cancer Survivor’s Day and for the entire month of June, those who have battled and won all forms of cancer and those who are still fighting will be recognized and celebrated. This is an effort by spearheaded by the National Cancer Survivor’s Foundation and the American Cancer Association to raise awareness and funds to continue to educate and research effective cancer cures.

According to the National Cancer Institute, a division of Cancer Control & Population Sciences of the United States National Institutes of Health:

  • As of January 2019, it is estimated that there are 16.9 million cancer survivors in the United States. This represents 5.0% of the population.
  • The number of cancer survivors is projected to grow to 26.1 million by 2040.
  • Over the next decade, the number of people who have lived 5 or more years after their cancer diagnosis is projected to increase approximately 33% to 19.1 million.
  • Sixty-four percent of survivors are currently 65 years of age or older.
