November is Diabetic Eye Disease Month. According to the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute, “Diabetic eye disease, a leading cause of blindness, often has no early warning signs. Early detection, timely treatment, and appropriate follow-up care are the only ways to prevent vision loss.”
The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests the following five steps to prevent diabetic eye diseases:
- Get a comprehensive dilated eye examination from your ophthalmologist at least once a year.
- Control your blood sugar.
- Maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
- Stop smoking.
- Exercise.
