October is Eye Injury Prevention Month. This health national health awareness campaign “aims to raise awareness about the types of eye injury that occur that could be avoided, as well as highlighting the need for more people to use protective eye wear appropriately.” Because accidental eye injury is one of the leading causes of eye impairment in the United States, it is important to take steps to prevent injury.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, eye injuries don’t just occur at work. Nearly half of eye injuries occur at home doing regular household chores such as cooking, cleaning, yard work, or home repairs. Protective eyewear such as glasses, goggles or face shields that meet the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z87.1 safety standard are recommended for household use. Eye protection at work must meet OSHA standards and various sports have required eye protection that must meet ASTM standards.
The seriousness of some eye injuries cannot be seen right away. Even if the injury seems minor, see a doctor as soon as possible to prevent any irreversible damage. You may walk-in or schedule an appointment at any of our convenient Primary Medical Care Center community clinics, you may visit our website at www.primarymed.com, or call (305)751-1500 for our Miami-Dade clinic, or (954)289-0000 for our Broward clinic.
