Excess Blood Sugar from Diabetes Can Lead to Cataracts

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), “excess blood sugar from diabetes can cause cataracts.” The World Health Organization defines cataracts as the “clouding of the lens of the eye which prevents clear vision.” The National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health explains that “adults with diabetes are 2-5 times more likely than those without diabetes to develop cataract.”

The good news is that 90% of vision loss due to diabetes is preventable according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC). However, this prognosis is only possible with early detection. Thus, it is critical for diabetics to get regular eye exams and to keep their blood sugar and insulin regulated.
