For Weight Loss in Seniors, Experts Suggest a Combination of Diet and Weight Training

While excess weight is a major health concern at any age, its ill-effects increase as we age. For seniors, factors such as mobility and the increased risk factors of chronic diseases and obesity can contribute to higher mortality rates. However, seniors do need to exercise extreme caution when undertaking any weight loss regimen and should always consult their physician first.

In a 2017 study published in the journal, Obesity, lead researcher, Kristen Beavers, concluded that, “The thought is that if you lose too much lean mass, then the resistance training is the way to go.” Co-author of this study, Stephanie Schiff, a dietician, explained that, “The best kind of diet for weight loss usually involves cutting calories. It keeps you full by including lots of vegetables and fruits, which are great sources of fiber. It includes healthy fats and does not include a lot of refined sugar or refined grains. It includes enough protein to spare your muscles.”
