Since 1998, October 22 has been observed annually as International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD). This is a day designated to raise global awareness about the speech disorder that affects one percent of the world’s population.
The National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), explains that stuttering is a “speech disorder characterized by repetition of sounds, syllables, or words; prolongation of sounds; and interruptions in speech known as blocks.” The National Stuttering Association reports that stuttering is genetically influenced and associated with differences in the brain. Thus, it is not learned behavior. However, through speech therapy, people who stutter can overcome this disorder.
