Healthy Holiday Travel Tips

The American Automobile Association (AAA), predicts that a record, 115.6 million Americans “will travel this holiday season, from Saturday, Dec. 21 through Wednesday, Jan. 1.” Of this number, AAA expects 104.8 million to travel by automobile, 6.97 million via airplanes, and 3.81 million will travel by trains, buses and cruise ships. If you and your family are among these record numbers of travelers, there are a few things you should know about staying safe and healthy while traveling during the holidays.

U.S. News & World Report suggests the following ways to stay healthy during holiday travel:

  • Plan your meals ahead of your trip.
  • Get a good night’s sleep before your trip.
  • Stay active and avoid sitting for long periods of time.
  • Avoid inflight alcoholic beverages, coffee or caffeinated drinks and drink lots of water instead.
  • Prepare for unexpected delays.
  • Plan family activities around fitness.
  • Pack healthy breakfast options to avoid high calorie breakfasts.

Airplanes and other public transportation expose you to lots of germs, viruses and bacteria. Proper handwashing and maintaining a healthy immune system are key to staying healthy when traveling amongst these throngs of holiday travelers this season.
