New Study Finds That Younger Men and Women are at Risk for Osteoporosis

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (JAOA), found that 28% of men and 26% of women, age 35 to 50, met the bone mineral density levels for osteopenia, a precursor for osteoporosis. This study raises eyebrows as osteoporosis is often associated with post-menopausal women.

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), defines osteoporosis as “a disease in which the density and quality of the bone are reduced.”  The authors of the study suggest that primary care physicians begin educating their patients as early as adolescence and young adulthood on the prevention of osteoporosis.

IOF suggest some of the following tips to prevent osteoporosis:

  • Ensure a nutritious diet and adequate calcium intake.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of vitamin D.
  • Participate in regular weight-bearing activity.
  • Avoid smoking and second-hand smoking.
  • Avoid heavy drinking.
