Several centuries ago, no one heard of lifestyle diseases. Today, lifestyles disease are highly prevalent and different from other kinds of diseases as they are linked with the way individuals lead their lives. These diseases which are gradually recording high mortality rates can be controlled and prevented by making changes to diets, lifestyle and engaging in physical activities.
Some of the common lifestyle diseases include:
Arteriosclerosis is a term used to refer to all arterial blood vessels-related diseases. The disease makes the wall of the blood vessel thicken and lose its elasticity causing chest pain, blood circulation disorders, and heart attacks. Arteriosclerosis is often linked to people who are obese, diabetic or have high blood pressure.
Cancer is an uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells in the body. A stressful lifestyle and decreased immunity of the body system can cause cancer cells to spring up in the body. Unhealthy habits such as smoking and exposure to other carcinogenic environments can also cause this deadly disease which occurs in most cells of the body.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Increased air pollution as a result of industrialization and other factors obstructs the airways making breathing difficult. The medical condition that results in difficulty in breathing in areas where the air is heavily polluted is called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and people with this condition experience coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing.
Diabetes is increasingly disgnosed all over the world. Poor diet and bad lifestyle choices are some of the causes of diabetes in adults. Diabetes mellitus which is caused by insufficient production of insulin which processes glucose in the body can lead to many complications in the body including blindness, and kidney diseases, amongst others.
Alzheimer’s Disease is a brain disease caused by lifestyle choices. The disease starts off with mild memory losses and gradually progresses to significant lapses in memory. It affects one’s ability to think or reason. Typically, Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed in people older than 65, but the lifestyle choices made in the youthful stage of life determines the condition of the body when one is older.
Stroke is a condition when there is oxygen deficiency in the brain, and this is caused by the blockage of vessels carrying blood to the brain. Stroke may lead to reversible or irreversible paralysis depending on the condition of the organs in the body. The medical condition occurs as a result of high blood pressure in the body which can either be hereditary or induced by stress due to the lifestyle maintained by individuals.
Unhealthy eating habit, lack of regular physical activity and a stressful lifestyle are a few factors that can cause obesity. A person who is obese is susceptible to other conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing issues, cardiovascular diseases and other related conditions.
High blood pressure
Genetic factors are known to high blood pressure. However, there are other controllable factors which can also cause high blood pressure. Bad diet, stress, and obesity which are related to a person’s lifestyle affect the blood pressure level. High blood pressure causes a lot of discomforts and can be life threatening too.
Excessive exposure to loud music on headphones causes inflammation, irritation or infection in the ear canal or the outer ear. It can eventually cause permanent ear damage.
Some of the life-threatening diseases can be prevented if one takes up the responsibility of ensuring that their lifestyle is not detrimental to their health.
