Yesterday Was International Human Rights Day Recognizing That Access to Healthcare is a Fundamental Human Right

Yesterday, Tuesday December 10, 2019, The United Nations (UN), celebrated International Human Rights Day. The theme for this year was “Tremendous Activism,” paying tribute to the role that young people’s activism plays in promoting human rights across the globe.

In a statement to mark the event, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres illuminated the need to recognize the efforts of young people, “Young people are on the front lines of action against the climate emergency, which poses a serious threat to human rights and to human life. Young women are at the forefront, making the link between denial of their rights and rising populism, xenophobia, and discrimination of all kinds.”

The United Nations first adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and International Human Rights Day has been observed since 1950. The World Health Organization recognizes “The right to the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental right of every human being.” Take control of your healthcare by participating fully in your healthcare decisions.
